“Your normal disposition, it’s fighting with your soul.” Multi-instrumentalist Atom Lazare’s music is as mysterious as his demeanor. A quiet man with a lot to say, his songs reflect intricate details of daily circumstances like slow-motion moments in classic movie scenes. Hailing from a small town off the coast of British Columbia, Canada, Lazare brings an island feel to his music, driven by groove, balanced with his fusion-forward instrumentalist tendencies. A drummer at heart and songwriter by trade, Atom’s repertoire is a whole expression of himself, delivering the perfect dichotomy between rhythm and fluidity.
Atom’s debut EP, The Word, is a window into his early inspiration, deeply rooted in spirituality and carrying a wisdom that is portrayed in the communication between instruments, played mostly by himself. The EP was recorded at Atom’s home studio in collaboration with his family: engineered by father Christopher Emery and joined by sister Phöenix Lazare on vocals. At the tender age of twenty-two, Lazare is unafraid to touch on heavy subjects such as substance abuse and unfaithfulness. In his song, “Another Man’s Shoes,” Lazare sings: “Nothing ever comes of the drinking and the drugs - of wasting all your time - wearing another man’s shoes.” This maturity is strung throughout the six-song project, completed by the album’s title track, “The Word,” a slow ballad dedicated to letting go of expectations and holding onto faith. Lazare’s rhythmic background delves into his formative years and continues with his acceptance into the Gulf Islands School for Performing Arts as a drummer and composer. Shortly after, at only seventeen, he was runner-up in Victoria Drum Fest’s ‘Drumeo Drum Solo Contest,’ performing at the festival’s prestigious event in Victoria, BC. Following the release of his debut EP in 2018, Atom’s song “Wrong Man Right” was featured on CBC Music’s Searchlight contest and remains his most popular release to date. Currently in his third year studying at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Lazare is recording new music to be compiled and released as his first full-length album upon graduation. These songs will act as reflection of growth throughout his experience settling into adulthood, and as always, a balance between structure and improvisation. Pulling inspiration from progressive artists such as Snarky Puppy, as well as classics like Peter Gabriel and David Bowie, Atom has created an unparalleled sound that echoes generations of popular music. Technique lays the foundation for Lazare’s songs, while mystery remains the glue that holds them together. |
